Mould on clothes, and the wardrobe that put it there

Getting the stain out is the easy half, and it changes nothing. Why a wardrobe on an outside wall is the worst place in a bedroom, what the people who handle mouldy textiles for a living do first, and when a garment is not worth saving.

The short version

Mould on your clothes is a storage problem wearing a laundry problem's clothes. The wardrobe is usually the culprit: it stands against the coldest wall in the room, the air inside it never moves, and it is dark. The government's damp guidance names the spot itself, listing walls behind sofas or wardrobes as where condensation lands. Wash the jumper and the wardrobe carries on doing it. On the removal question, the honest answer is not the popular one. The bodies that handle mouldy textiles for a living dry the growth out and take it off before anything wet touches the fabric, because rubbing a damp colony pushes it into the weave. And the Canadian Conservation Institute is blunt about the limit: some mould stains may not come out and will remain as permanent disfigurements.

A wardrobe is the coldest still air in the room, which is the whole problem

Mould does not need a wet wall. It needs a surface that stays humid, and a surface only has to be a few degrees colder than the room to get there.

Three conditions grow mould on a textile, and the Canadian Conservation Institute lists all three: relative humidity between 65 and 100%, warm temperatures, and poor air circulation. It adds the inverse, which is the useful half. Growth can be prevented if the RH is below 60% and good air circulation is maintained.

Now look at where your clothes live. A wardrobe is almost always pushed flat against an external wall, so the back of it is the coldest plane in the room. It is packed, so the air in it does not move. It is shut for most of the day. You have built a small unventilated cupboard against a cold external wall and filled it with cotton.

The number that matters is not the humidity of the room, it is the humidity at the surface. BS EN ISO 13788 puts the risk of mould growth above a critical surface relative humidity of 0,8, which is 80%, and it states that as a monthly mean rather than an instant switch. BS 5250:2011 makes the same point from the room's side: if the relative humidity of the air in a room exceeds 70%, the surface relative humidity of an external element is likely to exceed 80%, and if that lasts more than two or three days mould is likely to develop. The condensation page works that threshold through properly, so here is only the part that concerns your wardrobe.

Read the last column, because it is the answer to why a wardrobe and not a bookshelf. In a room at 20°C and 60% humidity, a surface only has to be 4.6 degrees colder than the room before it sits in the band where mould grows. At 70% the margin closes to 2.1 degrees, and at 80% there is no margin at all: the whole room is in the band. That is why the answer is never "the wall was soaking". The back of the wardrobe was slightly cooler than the room and nothing moved the air across it. That is the entire mechanism.

One honest limit. That table gives you a threshold, not a reading of your house. How much colder the back of a wardrobe actually runs depends on how the wall is built, what is stacked against it and where the thing stands. Nothing published settles it, so the number to get is your own. A cheap hygrometer on the shelf inside the wardrobe, left for a week, tells you more than any article can.

The mould usually comes out. The stain and the fibre are two other questions

People ask "can you get mould out of clothes" as one question. It is three, and they have different answers. Can the fungus be removed? Usually. Will the mark go? Sometimes not. Is the fabric still as strong as it was? That one nobody asks, and it is the one with teeth.

Canadian Conservation Institute describes what mould does to a textile as staining, weakening, or complete destruction of fibres, because the fungus is digesting the material it is sitting on. That is not a stain in the ketchup sense. It is something eating your jumper. On the mark itself, the same guidance says some mould stains may not come out and will remain as permanent disfigurements. TruWash, which runs a laundry service and has no reason to talk you out of a wash, reaches the same place from the other direction: the mould itself can go, and the visible staining sometimes cannot.

What the garment is made of decides a good deal of it. There are three fibre groups worth separating, and the order they come in is not a guess.

The cellulose row is the one to read twice. The National Archives puts a number on it: approximately 180 known species of mould have a preference for consuming materials made from, or containing, cellulose. Cotton is cellulose. Linen is cellulose. So is the viscose in half the dresses in the country. Your clothes are not incidental casualties of a damp wardrobe. To a large slice of the fungal kingdom they are lunch.

Dry it and brush it before anything wet touches it

This is where the published advice splits in two, and the split is worth knowing about before you start.

The laundry guides mostly begin by wetting the garment: a stain remover and a scrub, or a soak in diluted vinegar. The bodies whose job is mould on textiles begin at the opposite end. The National Archives will not touch it while it is growing at all, stating that treatment should not be undertaken while mould is active and that once active mould has been dehydrated, treatment can be undertaken. Its own remediation runs at a relative humidity below 50%, and loose growth comes off with a soft brush moved carefully toward the nozzle of a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner.

Canadian Conservation Institute sets out the same order for a textile: seal it in a plastic bag straight away, air-dry it outside on a clear dry day or freeze it to halt the growth, vacuum it through a HEPA filter with fine screening over the nozzle, twice and in perpendicular directions, and only then wash or dry clean it if possible. It also gives the reason that makes the whole sequence make sense, and it is mechanical rather than chemical: the nozzle must not touch the textile, because contact may cause the mould to smear and stain it.

Read that alongside the advice to scrub a damp patch with a toothbrush and the problem shows itself. Grinding a wet colony into a weave is how a removable deposit becomes a permanent mark. The brushing step is not fussiness. It is the difference between taking mould off fabric and rubbing it in.

Of the 8 sources in that table, 2 publish a chlorine-bleach method, 3 advise against it or reach past it for something else, and 3 take no position at all. That is not a consensus anybody should be printing as one. The UK guidance sits in the second group and gives its reason in one line: mould and mildew products should be used in preference to bleach, for health and safety reasons. That is a preference on safety grounds, not a claim that bleach kills nothing.

Look at who is in which row. 4 of those 8 sources sell the thing they are recommending, one of them a damp-proofing contractor whose article closes on a phone number. The two that start by drying the garment rather than wetting it are a national conservation body and a national archive, and neither has anything to sell you at the end of it.

On temperature, the guides all say "as hot as the label allows" and none of them says what hot is for. One published figure does exist. The International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene states that fabrics which may be contaminated with micro-organisms can be decontaminated using soap or detergent and hot water washing at 60°C or above, or at 40 to 60°C using an activated bleach-based powder, and that below 45°C the addition of hypochlorite bleach will promote decontamination. Two caveats, both real: that is about micro-organisms generally rather than mould specifically, and the guidance is from 2002. It is still the only number on the subject with a source attached. The same section says to launder contaminated items separately, which is worth doing here for the obvious reason.

Never put bleach on something you have just soaked in vinegar

This is the one line on this page that could actually hurt you, so it gets its own heading. A great deal of published advice recommends a white-vinegar soak, and a good deal of the same advice recommends bleach for whites. Vinegar is an acid. TruWash describes its own soak, accurately, as white vinegar at 5% acidity.

The UK Health Security Agency's chemical-hazard compendium for sodium hypochlorite is unambiguous about that combination. Corrosive gases may be produced when mixing bleach with other household cleaning products, it says: mixing with an acid will liberate chlorine and oxides of sulphur, mixing with ammonia will liberate chloramines, and inhaling either may result in pulmonary irritation or chemical pneumonitis. The same hazard is written into the labelling rules. Under the GB CLP Regulation, hypochlorite solution at 5% active chlorine or more carries the supplementary statement "Contact with acids liberates toxic gas".

The same document gives the other half, and it deserves saying too: with normal use, household bleach is not a respiratory hazard. The danger is not the bottle. It is a sink with two things in it, which is precisely the situation a step-by-step article creates when step two is a vinegar soak and step four is bleach.

The practical rule is boring and it works. One product at a time, rinsed properly between them, a window open, and gloves on. If you are brushing dried growth off a coat, the conservation bodies wear more than that: Canadian Conservation Institute calls for an N 95 or N 100 disposable respirator, disposable gloves and non-vented goggles for an area of a square metre or less, and The National Archives gives the UK equivalents as FFP 2 or 3 masks to BS EN 149:2001, nitrile or vinyl gloves and eye protection to EN 166:2002. Both note that disturbing mould is what releases spores into the room in the first place, which is the reason the brushing happens outside.

Some of it is not worth saving, and the guidance says so out loud

This is the sentence the laundry advice will not write, because there is nothing to sell at the end of it.

The UK government guidance is direct about porous things. Absorbent materials such as carpets, soft furnishings and ceiling tiles may have to be thrown away if they become mouldy, it says, as it may be difficult or impossible to remove the mould completely. A garment is absorbent in exactly the way a soft furnishing is. ABC News, summarising mould remediation practice, lands in the same place: disposal is often recommended for heavily affected porous materials, particularly where staining, odour or repeated contamination persists.

So the honest triage is not complicated. A few spots on a cotton shirt, caught early, is a brush and a hot wash. A wool coat that has been furred over a whole winter at the back of the wardrobe is a different object: the label rules out the hot wash, the staining has had months to set, and the same guidance that governs taking mould off a wall says the porous things may simply have to go.

Try it once, properly, by all means. Dry it, brush it, wash it as hot as the label lets you, look at it in daylight. If the mark is still there after that, you now know the answer rather than suspecting it, and five more cycles of soaking will mostly cost you five more cycles.

One thing not to do, and it comes up constantly on the forums: do not grab a hard-surface mould and mildew spray simply because it is already under the sink. Read what the bottle is actually for before it goes near a garment, and follow that rather than a comment thread.

Fixing the wardrobe is the half that actually works

Everything above is housekeeping. This part is the fix, and it pulls on two levers only: how much water is in the air, and how cold that back panel is. Every remedy worth doing is one or the other.

Move it off the wall and let air behind it. The government guidance leads its own list with the importance of leaving a gap between furniture and external walls. It does not state a distance, and nor will I, because nothing published settles one. Far enough that a hand fits behind it is the practical version. Stop packing the rail solid, and open the doors for a while when you air the room.

Never put anything away that is not completely dry. Not damp-ish. Dry. A jumper folded away slightly damp is a colony with a packed lunch, and it is sitting in the stillest air in the room.

Get the room's humidity down. The conservation threshold is the one to aim under: below 60% relative humidity with good air circulation, mould growth can be prevented. That is a room-level target you can hold with a hygrometer. Ventilation is the cheapest way to move it, and a dehumidifier is the machine that does it on demand, with the limits that page sets out. If the washing is going musty because it dries too slowly indoors, drying it in a closed room with a dehumidifier fixes the cause rather than the smell.

Warm the surface, not only the air. The table further up cuts both ways. At 60% humidity a surface 5 degrees under room temperature is already in the band, so lifting the background temperature of a bedroom lifts that panel with it. Steady background heat beats short blasts for exactly this reason, and an unheated spare bedroom with a full wardrobe in it is the classic case.

Stop drying washing in the bedroom. BS 5250:2011 is flat about it: laundry should never be hung to dry in unheated or unventilated rooms. How much water that actually adds is genuinely disputed, and the three published sources do not agree. BS 5250 puts indoor clothes drying at 1,500 grams a day, BRE Digest 297 puts it at 3 to 7.5 litres a day, and CIBSE Guide A puts it at 5 to 14 kilograms a day. Averaging those into one tidy figure would be inventing a number none of them states. The useful point survives the disagreement: it is a lot of water, and a bedroom with a closed door is where it goes.

If the wardrobe wall is also showing mould, or the bedroom windows run wet every morning, the clothes were never the story. Same room, same air, same cold surfaces. One week of hygrometer readings will tell you more than three more washes.

Where the published sources disagree, as they do flatly on bleach and on how much water indoor drying adds, the disagreement is printed rather than averaged away. What you can act on is where it grew and how humid that spot was, and a cheap hygrometer answers that.
